At Discover Dunwoody, we are proud to honor the dedicated professionals who work behind the scenes to drive the success of the film and entertainment industry. Our Distinguished Production Associate Award, presented each quarter, shines a spotlight on individuals whose hard work and expertise make a lasting impact. For Quarter 3 of 2024, we are thrilled to recognize Katy Morecraft, a production expert whose perseverance, talent, and leadership continue to inspire.
Katy’s journey began in Louisiana in 2015, where she worked as a seamstress on “Salem.” When Louisiana withdrew its film tax credits, Katy took a leap of faith and relocated to Atlanta, a growing hub for the entertainment industry. Her work as a Set Production Assistant on “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors” sparked her interest in locations management. Her drive and dedication soon led to positions on major productions like “Kevin Probably Saves the World” and “Greenleaf,” where she quickly rose through the ranks to become an Assistant Locations Manager and later a Key Assistant Locations Manager.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Katy took on a pivotal role as Health and Safety Manager for “The Walking Dead,” ensuring the safety of cast and crew during a challenging time for the industry. Her expertise in this role opened doors for her to work on other AMC projects such as “Fear the Walking Dead” and “Tales of the Walking Dead.” She also served as a location scout for “Will Trent,” applying her talent for identifying unique and diverse filming spots that helped bring productions to life.
Since being recognized as Discover Dunwoody’s June honoree, Katy has achieved even more notable milestones. Most recently, she was asked to be the Locations Manager for a new production company that had previously filmed in Los Angeles and New York but wanted to explore Georgia’s potential. Katy took on the project, not for the financial gain, but to prove Georgia’s capabilities as a top-tier filming destination—and she succeeded. The shoot was so successful that one producer joked the final product looked “too good,” setting high expectations for future work. Thanks to Katy’s efforts, the company will be returning to Georgia for another shoot next month.
In addition, Katy was selected as the Locations Manager for a commercial shoot for a Virginia-based client. While the production could have been shot in Virginia, the client chose Georgia for its versatile locations, experienced crews, and a community that embraces the arts. This accomplishment further highlights Katy’s impact on Georgia’s growing reputation in the industry.
Reflecting on her recognition and the selection committee’s decision to honor her with the quarterly award, Katy shared, “To be honored by Discover Dunwoody is way more than just an award. To me, it goes so much deeper, showing the support and belief that influential leaders in the industry have in me, I couldn’t be more honored!” Looking to the future, she added, “I’m really excited to get deeper into this next chapter of my life and the industry and see how I can use my knowledge and talents to enrich and give opportunities to others.”
We are proud to recognize Katy Morecraft as our Distinguished Production Associate for Quarter 3 of 2024, and we look forward to seeing where her career takes her next!
